From Ikebukuro to Akihabara
A Sunday route through the Electric Town, Ochanomizu, Kanda and Ueno
Published
From an electronics town to a town of anime, games and hobbies: Akihabara has something new every time you go.
This post covers how to get there from Ikebukuro, then Akihabara's highlights and the best shops,
and finally a full day on foot: Ochanomizu's Hijiri Bridge, Yushima Seido and Kanda Myojin in the morning, the Electric Town at midday,
then 2k540 and Ameyoko to Shinobazu Pond in Ueno by evening, all checked against October 2026 information.
Assumptions, and how the day is planned
This route uses Sunday 18 October 2026 as the example. Sunday, because Akihabara's Chuo-dori becomes a car-free street in the afternoon (13:00–17:00 from October to March). Train times are from NAVITIME for that day.
Three ideas shape the route.
- Start the morning in Ochanomizu — most Akihabara shops open at 10 or 11. Until then, take the Marunouchi Line to Ochanomizu and see Hijiri Bridge, Yushima Seido and Kanda Myojin, landmarks from the Edo and Meiji periods. From Kanda Myojin it is a short walk downhill into the Electric Town
- Time the afternoon to the car-free street — at 13:00 Chuo-dori closes to traffic. Save the Electric Town walk and shopping for then
- Walk north to Ueno in the evening — through 2k540 under the tracks and Ameyoko to Shinobazu Pond after sunset (about 17:03). Ueno to Ikebukuro is 16 minutes on the Yamanote Line
The arcade in the red building on Chuo-dori, GiGO Akihabara Building 1, closed at the end of August 2025. Animate Akihabara reopened after a renovation on 8 August 2026, adding a floor just for capsule toys, among other changes. Keep this in mind if you use an older guidebook.
Getting from Ikebukuro to Akihabara
The simplest way is the JR Yamanote Line towards Ueno and Tokyo (platform 7 at Ikebukuro). No change, about 20 minutes, via Otsuka, Tabata, Nippori and Ueno.
| Route | Time | Fare | Changes | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JR Yamanote Line (towards Ueno, Tokyo) | About 20 min | ¥260 (IC ¥253) | None | Going straight to the Electric Town |
| JR Yamanote Line, then the Keihin-Tohoku rapid from Tabata | About 17–18 min | ¥260 (IC ¥253) | 1 (at Tabata) | Saving a few minutes in the daytime. The rapid runs only in the middle of the day |
| Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line to Ochanomizu | 11 min | ¥210 (IC ¥209) | None | This post's route, walking from Ochanomizu |
| Marunouchi Line to Ochanomizu, then the JR Sobu Line local | 11 min + 2 min | ¥210 + ¥160 (IC ¥209 + ¥155) | 1 | Rainy days, or less walking |
| Marunouchi Line to Awajicho | 13 min | ¥210 (IC ¥209) | None | Starting from Manseibashi and mAAch ecute (3 min from exit A3) |
Times and fares from NAVITIME (18 October 2026). JR fares are after the March 2026 revision.
JR Akihabara has two main exits. The Electric Town exit leads to the shops and Radio Kaikan; the Central gate is closest to Yodobashi Akiba. If you get lost inside the station, follow the yellow signs for the Electric Town exit.
The day's schedule
Take the 8:40 Marunouchi Line from Ikebukuro to arrive at Ochanomizu at 8:51. Ochanomizu and Kanda Myojin in the morning, the Electric Town from about 11:00, and the car-free street from 13:00. Walk to Ueno in the evening and take the 19:02 Yamanote Line from Ueno, arriving in Ikebukuro at 19:18.

Morning: Hijiri Bridge and Yushima Seido
Out of the Marunouchi Line's Ochanomizu station, head just east to Hijiri Bridge. Below, the Kanda River runs through a green gorge. The Marunouchi Line, underground almost everywhere else, comes out here just to cross the river; even non-rail fans stop to watch.
Cross the bridge to the south and the green dome of Nikolai-do (Holy Resurrection Cathedral) comes into view. This Byzantine-style cathedral was completed in 1891 and is an Important Cultural Property. Visits inside are on weekday afternoons only, so on a Sunday morning, admire it from outside.
Back over the bridge to the north side. Yushima Seido was built in 1690 as a shrine to Confucius and later became the shogunate's academy (Shoheizaka Gakumonjo). In the Meiji era, the schools that grew into today's University of Tsukuba and Ochanomizu University started here. The calm black Taiseiden hall feels a world away from the Akihabara to come. The gate opens at 9:30 (closing time varies with the season).
Kanda Myojin, the Electric Town's shrine
A short walk north from Yushima Seido brings you to the vermilion gate of Kanda Myojin (Kanda Shrine). It is the guardian shrine of 108 districts including Kanda, Nihonbashi, Akihabara, Otemachi and Marunouchi, and enshrines Daikoku (for good relationships), Ebisu (for business) and Taira no Masakado (against misfortune). It is also known for the Kanda Matsuri festival, held in May every other year.
- Charms for the Electric Town — being next to Akihabara, the shrine offers charms to protect electronic devices
- EDOCCO cultural centre — a new building in the grounds with a shop for lucky charms and Edo-themed goods, and the Edokko Cafe Masumasu, serving sweets by day (its signature is a parfait in a wooden masu box)
- Museum — weekends and holidays, 10:00–16:00, ¥300 for adults
After your visit, head east and downhill towards Suehirocho. From here on, you are in Akihabara's Electric Town.
Things to do in Akihabara
Akihabara once packed about 1,000 electronics shops into roughly one square kilometre. Today, alongside appliances and computers, it is crowded with shops for anime, manga, games and figures, a hub of Japanese pop culture. The famous stores on the main street are only half of it; the small specialist shops in the back streets are what make Akihabara. If a building looks interesting, keep climbing the floors.
| Activity | How to enjoy it | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Anime and subculture | New character goods, second-hand doujinshi and animation cels, figures. Every building has its own speciality | Animate, Radio Kaikan, Mandarake Complex |
| Maid cafes | An Akihabara classic where maids greet you with “Welcome home”. Food or dessert sets with a souvenir photo; usually a one-hour visit | @home cafe (main branch in Sotokanda 1-chome) |
| Retro games | Hunt for classic software and consoles from the Famicom era on, and play old machines for ¥100 | Super Potato Akihabara |
| Capsule toys | Hundreds of machines in specialist shops: grown-up themes, animals, miniature food and more | Akihabara Gachapon Kaikan, Animate ANNEX |
| Electronic parts, appliances | Tiny parts stalls under the tracks, plus the latest appliances, cameras and computers. Many shops sell tax-free | Yodobashi Akiba, the streets around the station |
| Car-free street | On Sunday afternoons, walk down the middle of Chuo-dori and look up at the signs | Chuo-dori (Sotokanda 5-chome to Manseibashi) |
@home cafe sells store-specific priority entry tickets on its website in advance (no cancellations or refunds). Weekend and holiday hours are 10:00–22:00. Photographing the maids or other guests, and touching the maids, are not allowed; take your photos in the set souvenir shot. Check prices on the official site.

Lunch
The route stops for lunch at Marugo, a tonkatsu restaurant below Kanda Myojin near Shoheibashi bridge. It is popular for its thick loin cutlets; lunch runs 11:30–14:50 (last order 14:00), and it is closed on Mondays and the first to third Tuesdays. There may be a queue, so allow time.
| Restaurant | Food | Hours | Closed | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marugo | Tonkatsu | 11:30–14:50, 17:00–20:50 | Mon, 1st–3rd Tue | Loin cutlet set about ¥2,400 (from reviews) |
| Kanda Yabu Soba | Soba | 11:30–20:30 (last order 20:00) | Wed | Head house of the Yabu soba tradition, founded 1880. 2 min from Awajicho exit A3 |
| Yodobashi Akiba 8F | Restaurant floor | 11:00–23:00 | — | Good for rain or groups: eel, soba and more |
| mAAch ecute restaurants | Ramen, beer, cafe | Varies | — | Also good for the afternoon coffee break |
Afternoon: the car-free street and mAAch ecute
At 13:00, about 570 m of Chuo-dori, from the Sotokanda 5-chome crossing to the Manseibashi crossing, becomes car-free. It runs until 17:00 from October to March (18:00 from April to September), and may be cancelled in rain or strong wind. Looking up at the signs from the middle of the road is only possible now. Super Potato, @home cafe and Radio Kaikan are all a short walk from here.
When your feet need a rest, go to mAAch ecute Kanda Manseibashi by Manseibashi bridge. It is built into the red-brick viaduct of Manseibashi Station, which opened in 1912 and closed in 1943, with restaurants and shops inside the arches. The old platform is now a glass-walled viewing deck with Chuo Line trains passing on both sides; the cafe-restaurant there, PLATINUM FISH (Sundays and holidays 11:00–21:00), is the place to sit down. There is also a craft beer bar, Hitachino Brewing Lab.
After your break, cut through Akihabara Station to Yodobashi Akiba on the east side to browse appliances, cameras and toys for souvenirs. Visitors can buy tax-free on some floors (passport required).
Evening: 2k540, Ameyoko, Shinobazu Pond
From Yodobashi, walk north along the tracks. Under the viaduct between Akihabara and Okachimachi stations, 2k540 AKI-OKA ARTISAN is a makers' street that opened in 2010, with craft workshops, galleries, traditional crafts and shops gathering regional specialities: a hand-made world quite unlike Akihabara (11:00–19:00, closed Wednesdays).
North of Okachimachi Station begins Ameyoko (Ameya-Yokocho). About 500 shops line the roughly 500 m to Ueno Station: seafood, sweets, clothes, cosmetics and food stalls from many countries. Graze your way to Ueno in the evening bustle.
West of Ueno Station lies Shinobazu Pond in Ueno Park (free). About 2 km around, this natural pond is covered in lotus in summer, and the leaves turn colour in autumn. Sunset is around 17:03. Watch the sky darken and the city lights reflect in the water to close the day.
Night: dinner in Ueno, back to Ikebukuro
For dinner, join the lively izakaya and stalls of Ameyoko. If you want something sweet, Ueno's long-established sweet shop Mihashi serves anmitsu (fruit anmitsu about ¥920, from reviews; 10:30–21:30).
To go back, take the JR Yamanote Line towards Ikebukuro and Shinjuku (platform 2) from Ueno: no change, 16 minutes, ¥210. The 19:02 arrives at 19:18.
