From Ikebukuro to Studio Tour Tokyo
A day behind the scenes of Harry Potter: in for the 9:00 slot, and back to Ikebukuro for sunset
Published
Fifteen minutes from Ikebukuro on the Seibu line, Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo - The Making of Harry Potter stands on the old Toshimaen amusement park site.
It lets you walk through sets, props and costumes actually used in the films.
This guide strings the day together with October 2026 information: buying timed tickets, the morning train, the route inside and when to eat, the Halloween season to 8 November,
and a park and Ikebukuro's observatory on the way home.
Assumptions and approach
This plan is built around Saturday 24 October 2026 (doors 8:30, first tour 9:00, last tour 17:00, closing 21:00). From 10 September to 8 November the studio runs its first Dark Arts Halloween in Japan.
Three ideas shape the plan:
- Take the first 9:00 slot: entry is timed in 30-minute slots, and an early one gives you room to linger. The official guide suggests 3 to 4 hours, and there is no time limit
- Eat at the halfway point: right in the middle of the route are the outdoor Backlot, a cafe and the Butterbeer bar. Lunch there keeps you going for the second half
- Sunset in Ikebukuro: leave in the early afternoon, stroll the park by the station, then head back to Ikebukuro for the Sunshine 60 observatory at sunset (about 16:55)
A fire broke out in part of the facility on the night of Tuesday 29 September 2026 (put out quickly, no injuries). The tour is running as normal, but sales and loans of the digital guide are suspended for now. The outdoor Knight Bus is off display for repairs and is due back around early November. The studio is closed on 11 and 12 November. Check the official notices before you go.
The day at a glance
The 8:12 local for Toshimaen from Seibu Ikebukuro gets you to Toshimaen at 8:24 with no change. Doors open at 8:30 for the 9:00 slot. The tour and lunch take you to about 13:30; the 14:52 from Toshimaen reaches Ikebukuro at 15:07, and dusk is spent at the observatory.

(1) Morning: Ikebukuro to Toshimaen
Start at Seibu Ikebukuro Station, which connects to the JR and subway stations. Since its 2023 makeover the station has had Studio Tour decorations.
Take a local train bound for Toshimaen. Some Seibu Ikebukuro Line trains turn onto the Toshima Line at Nerima and run through to Toshimaen. If the destination says Toshimaen, stay put; if you are on anything else (for Hanno, say), change at Nerima for the Toshima Line, one stop and about two minutes. You might catch the Harry Potter-wrapped "Studio Tour Tokyo Express".
Toshimaen, the end of the line, has red-pillared platforms and the "Magic Train" display out front. Head north from the gates and cross the Shakujii River into the studio grounds. The official guide says two minutes on foot; allow about six to reach the building entrance.
From Shinjuku, the Toei Oedo Line runs straight to Toshimaen in about 20 minutes. Its Toshimaen station is just east of the Seibu one, and Exit A2 is the nearest. From Haneda Airport, a limousine bus stopping at Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo started in March 2026. If you drive, parking is ¥2,000 per car.
(2) First half: from the Great Hall to the Forbidden Forest
Lighten your load in the lobby first: there are paid lockers inside and outside, and large suitcases belong in the outdoor ones. The lobby has the main shop, the Food Hall and a cafe. When your 9:00 slot is called, the tour begins.
- The Great Hall: the first big moment, walking straight into the Hogwarts hall used in the films
- Life at Hogwarts: the Gryffindor common room and dormitory, the Slytherin common room, the library, the moving staircase and more
- Costumes and props: costumes, wands and magical objects, with notes on how the makers did it
- The Forbidden Forest: a dim forest set; look out for the creature effects
You can take photos and video almost everywhere except the pre-show and the green-screen area, but group photos inside are discouraged; take them in the plaza outside the entrance afterwards. Out of respect for the rights in the works, this guide shows no photos from inside.
(2) Midday: a break on the Backlot
Out of the forest you reach the Backlot, with outdoor sets from the film studio and a chance for fresh air halfway round (the Knight Bus is currently off display for repairs).
- Backlot Cafe: hot meals, light bites, sweets and seasonal dishes, partway through the tour
- The Butterbeer Bar: billed as the world's largest; the official description calls the taste refreshing
Restaurants and cafes take no reservations, so aim for the 11 o'clock hour rather than the noon peak. There are menus for food allergies, and anyone with dietary restrictions may bring their own food. Afternoon tea (¥7,500) is served at reserved seats in the Backlot Cafe; start by three hours before closing, 90 minutes per sitting.
(2) Second half: Platform 9¾, the Ministry of Magic, Diagon Alley
- Platform 9¾ and the Hogwarts Express: a real steam locomotive at the platform, and you can step into the carriages. Photo queues build up, so leave time
- The Ministry of Magic: a full-scale set found only in Tokyo, and you can walk into it
- Diagon Alley: the street of wizarding shops, with Gringotts bank
- The final room: the large Hogwarts castle model used in filming closes the tour
The route is one-way and there is no re-entry, so take your time at the sets you care about. It ends back in the lobby, by the shop.
To 8 November: Dark Arts Halloween
From Thursday 10 September to Sunday 8 November 2026 the theme is the dark arts. At no extra cost, the regular tour adds:
- Halloween in the Great Hall: floating jack-o'-lanterns and tables piled with sweets
- Death Eaters: they appear at spots marked with the Dark Mark. The official site posts an image with rough times and places (they may change on the day)
- Dementors in the Forbidden Forest
- Limited menus: a Halloween burger and Forbidden Forest pancakes in the Food Hall, a Dark Mark milkshake at the Frog Cafe and more
The after-dark Night Tour, a wand combat lesson for children and dinners in the Great Hall cost extra and need booking. Check availability on the ticket page.
Afternoon: the shop and Nerima Castle Ruins Park
The shop is in the lobby, full of wands, robes and sweets. The official guide suggests buying a wand or robe before the tour to get in the mood; if you'd rather not carry it, buy at the end. You can't go back in once you leave, so check you have everything first.
Outside, walk through Nerima Castle Ruins Park between the studio and the station. Part of the old Toshimaen site opened as a metropolitan park in May 2023, with a path along the Shakujii River and a big lawn, a good place to rest your legs.
For a longer rest, Niwa no Yu, a hot-spring spa just north of the station (10:00-23:00, last entry 22:00), is an option; swap the observatory for its night view if you do.
(3) Dusk: back to Ikebukuro and up the tower
Coming back, a Seibu train bound for Ikebukuro needs no change (14:52, arriving 15:07). Rest at Sunshine City, about 10 minutes' walk east of the station, then go up to Tenbou Park, the Sunshine 60 observatory. Sunset on 24 October is about 16:55, so going up at 16:30 gives you dusk and the night view together.
Observatory tickets are ¥900 at weekends and holidays (¥700 on weekdays). Weekends, holidays and busy days need a timed web ticket.
