Marvel Films in Story Order
All 38 MCU movies, rearranged by when they happen in the story
Published
It started with Iron Man and grew into The Avengers, Captain America, Spider-Man and many more.
By October 2026, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) had released 38 films.
But the order they came out is not the order things happen. This post puts all 38 in story order,
then walks through each era, the order within each series, how the MCU relates to other films, and the best way in for first-timers.
About this post
The MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) is the film series Marvel Studios has been making since Iron Man in 2008. Each film stands on its own, but characters and events carry across films, and together they tell one large story.
- Scope — the 38 MCU theatrical films released by October 2026. The Disney+ series come up only where the story needs them
- Order — based on the timeline order Disney+ publishes (updated November 2025), with Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is not in that list, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 2026) slotted in where the story puts them
- Story years — approximate, from what the films show and published timelines. Some films contradict each other, and fans disagree on a few
Film stills, posters and character art belong to Marvel Studios (Disney) and Sony Pictures. Putting them on a blog needs the rights holders' permission, and the conditions for quoting them are strict, so this post uses no stills, only diagrams and tables made by the author. For trailers, see the official sites and video channels.
Plot details are kept to what is needed to explain the order, but the big turns of Infinity War and Endgame do come up. If you have not seen them, take care.
The big picture
Sorted by story year, the 38 films fall into eight periods. The most important thing to know: Endgame jumps the story forward five years. In Infinity War (2018), half of all life in the universe vanishes; after five years for those left behind, the story moves on to 2023. Fans call it “the Snap”, and it splits MCU time into before and after.
The MCU by story year
At the dashed line the story jumps five years. Every film set from 2023 on assumes that “five years later” world
Sagas and phases
Marvel Studios groups its films into phases by release period, and groups phases into sagas. Phases One to Three form the Infinity Saga, about the six Infinity Stones. Phases Four to Six form the Multiverse Saga, set across countless parallel worlds.
Two sagas, six phases
Captain Marvel, for example, is a Phase Three film set in 1995: a classic case of release order and story order parting ways
All 38 films in story order
First, everything in one table. The number on the left is the story order; “Released” is the US release year.

Iron Man 3 takes place at Christmas 2012, but Disney+'s timeline order puts it after Thor: The Dark World. Either way round, the story holds together.
1940s to 1995: the prequels
| Film | Story year (approx.) | Released | In a line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Captain America: The First Avenger | 1943–45 | 2011 | WWII: Steve Rogers becomes a super-soldier |
| Captain Marvel | 1995 | 2019 | Earth in the '90s, with a young Nick Fury |
The story begins in the middle of the Second World War. Frail young Steve Rogers becomes Captain America through a super-soldier programme. The film also introduces the cosmic “Cube” and the organisation Hydra, both keys to what follows.
Next comes Captain Marvel, set in 1995. Released only in 2019, it shows a young Nick Fury, the future director of S.H.I.E.L.D., and even ties into where the name “Avengers” comes from: a prequel in all but name.
2010 to 2012: the Avengers assemble
| Film | Story year (approx.) | Released | In a line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron Man | 2010 | 2008 | Tony Stark becomes Iron Man; where the MCU began |
| Iron Man 2 | 2011 | 2010 | Six months on; Black Widow's first appearance |
| The Incredible Hulk | 2011 | 2008 | Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) on the run |
| Thor | 2011 | 2011 | Thor is banished from Asgard to Earth |
| The Avengers | 2012 | 2012 | The heroes assemble; the Battle of New York |
The modern story starts with businessman Tony Stark becoming Iron Man. Then, at almost the same time, come scientist Bruce Banner, who turns into the Hulk, and Thor, banished from Asgard. Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk and Thor all happen around 2011; their order hardly matters.
In 2012, the heroes form a team for the first time in The Avengers and fight an alien army in New York. That battle is the starting point for many films that follow.
2012 to 2015: space and Ultron
| Film | Story year (approx.) | Released | In a line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thor: The Dark World | 2013 | 2013 | Set in London; one of the Infinity Stones appears |
| Iron Man 3 | Late 2012 | 2013 | Christmas after the Battle of New York |
| Captain America: The Winter Soldier | 2014 | 2014 | An enemy hidden inside S.H.I.E.L.D. |
| Guardians of the Galaxy | 2014 | 2014 | Out in space, a team of misfits forms |
| Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 | 2014 | 2017 | A few months after the first |
| Avengers: Age of Ultron | 2015 | 2015 | The AI Ultron and the battle of Sokovia |
| Ant-Man | 2015 | 2015 | Scott Lang becomes the second Ant-Man |
After New York, the heroes go their own ways. Tony struggles with the aftermath (Iron Man 3), while Steve confronts Hydra hidden inside S.H.I.E.L.D. (The Winter Soldier). Meanwhile, out in space, a band of misfits becomes the Guardians of the Galaxy.
In 2015, Ultron, an AI Tony created, goes rogue, and the Avengers fight in the Eastern European country of Sokovia (Age of Ultron). The damage from that battle lights the fuse for the next era's big conflict.
2016 to 2018: a split, then Thanos
| Film | Story year (approx.) | Released | In a line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Captain America: Civil War | 2016 | 2016 | The Sokovia Accords split the Avengers |
| Black Widow | 2016 | 2021 | Natasha Romanoff right after Civil War |
| Black Panther | 2016 | 2018 | T'Challa becomes king of Wakanda |
| Spider-Man: Homecoming | 2016 | 2017 | High-schooler Peter Parker after Civil War |
| Doctor Strange | 2016–17 | 2016 | A brilliant surgeon turns to the mystic arts |
| Thor: Ragnarok | 2017 | 2017 | Thor and Hulk meet again in space |
| Ant-Man and the Wasp | 2018 | 2018 | The quantum realm, setting up Endgame |
| Avengers: Infinity War | 2018 | 2018 | The fight against Thanos and the six Stones |
In 2016, the Sokovia Accords, which would put heroes under UN control, split the Avengers into Steve's side and Tony's (Civil War). Black Panther and the MCU's Spider-Man (Tom Holland) both debut here. Black Widow, Black Panther and Homecoming all take place shortly after Civil War.
Then in 2018, Thanos, who wants to wipe out half of all life, gathers the six Infinity Stones and closes in on Earth (Infinity War). Ant-Man and the Wasp happens just before, and its ending leads straight into the next film.
2018 to 2023: the five-year gap and Endgame
| Film | Story year (approx.) | Released | In a line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avengers: Endgame | 2018 → 2023 | 2019 | The story jumps five years; the Infinity Saga ends |
Endgame picks up right after Infinity War and then jumps five years ahead to 2023. The remaining heroes attempt one last mission, and the Infinity Saga that began in 2008 comes to an end.
Every film after this assumes a world where the vanished came back after five years. Families with new age gaps, people who lost five years: that gap is the backdrop for much of what follows.
2024 to 2025: the multiverse opens
| Film | Story year (approx.) | Released | In a line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings | 2024 | 2021 | A father, a son and the Ten Rings |
| Spider-Man: Far From Home | 2024 | 2019 | Eight months after Endgame; a school trip to Europe |
| Eternals | 2024 (from 7,000 years ago) | 2021 | An immortal race that has watched over humanity |
| Spider-Man: No Way Home | 2024 | 2021 | A spell gone wrong opens the multiverse |
| Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness | 2024 | 2022 | A dangerous journey across the multiverse |
| Black Panther: Wakanda Forever | 2025 | 2022 | Wakanda after the king, and an undersea kingdom |
| Thor: Love and Thunder | 2025 | 2022 | Against a killer of gods |
| Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania | 2025 | 2023 | Meeting Kang the Conqueror in the quantum realm |
In the post-Endgame world, new heroes' stories begin (Shang-Chi, Eternals). Spider-Man's identity is exposed to the world; he turns to Doctor Strange for a spell, and the doors to the multiverse swing open (No Way Home). Multiverse of Madness then shows just how dangerous the multiverse is.
Quantumania introduced Kang the Conqueror, who had been set up as the Multiverse Saga's big villain. This stretch is also closely tied to the Disney+ series Loki and WandaVision.
2026 on: new heroes
| Film | Story year (approx.) | Released | In a line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 | 2026 | 2023 | The team's last ride, into Rocket's past |
| The Marvels | 2026 | 2023 | Three heroes keep swapping places |
| Deadpool & Wolverine | c. 2024 (mostly another universe) | 2024 | The TVA and a universe from the X-Men films |
| Captain America: Brave New World | 2027 | 2025 | Sam Wilson as the new Captain America |
| Thunderbolts* | 2027 | 2025 | Former agents with pasts form a team |
| Spider-Man: Brand New Day | c. 2028 (four years after No Way Home) | 2026 | In a world that has forgotten Peter |
After the Guardians' last ride (Vol. 3), the story shifts to a new generation. Sam Wilson, who took the shield from Steve, becomes the new Captain America (Brave New World), and a team of former agents with pasts is born (Thunderbolts*). Deadpool & Wolverine moves between the TVA, which polices time, and the world of the earlier X-Men films; Disney+ places it here.
The latest film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day (released 31 July 2026), is set four years after No Way Home: Peter Parker keeps being a hero in a world where everyone has forgotten him.
| Film | Story year (approx.) | Released | In a line |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Fantastic Four: First Steps | Another Earth (Earth-828) | 2025 | A retro-futuristic Earth separate from the main MCU |
The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) is set on another Earth (Earth-828), separate from the main MCU, with a retro-futuristic look recalling the 1960s; Disney+ puts it last in its timeline order. How this Earth's heroes connect with the rest is the next big thing to watch.

Films outside the MCU, and other universes
Some Spider-Man and Hulk films are not part of the MCU. They are easy to mix up, so here is how they fit.
The MCU and other film series
NWH is No Way Home; D&W is Deadpool & Wolverine. Films from other universes meet the MCU through the multiverse
- Sony's earlier Spider-Man films — the three with Tobey Maguire (2002–07) and the two with Andrew Garfield (2012, 2014) are a separate series, but they cross into the MCU in No Way Home. Seeing them first makes that film far more fun
- Sony's Venom and related films — Sony's films about Spider-Man's allies and enemies are also kept apart from the MCU
- Hulk (2003) — Ang Lee's film has no link to the MCU, whose Hulk starts with The Incredible Hulk (2008)
- 20th Century Fox's X-Men films — long a separate series, they met the MCU in Deadpool & Wolverine
Which order should you watch in?
| If you are | Try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New to the MCU | Release order (from Iron Man) | The order the filmmakers intended, so reveals and payoffs land as designed |
| Rewatching | This post's story order | Causes and effects line up, and each character's journey becomes one line |
| Short on time | Build around the Avengers films | The Avengers → Age of Ultron → Civil War → Infinity War → Endgame, then add solo films for heroes you like |
| Getting ready for Doomsday | Focus on recent films | Post-Endgame films, especially Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, The Fantastic Four and Brand New Day |
Disney+ has a collection in timeline order. The Spider-Man solo films are Sony Pictures releases, so they may stream elsewhere.
Coming next
- Avengers: Doomsday — opens 18 December 2026 in Japan and the US. The first new Avengers film since Endgame, and the peak of Phase Six
- Avengers: Secret Wars — announced for winter 2027, closing the Multiverse Saga
Release plans are as announced on 11 October 2026 and may change; check the official sites for the latest.
